DjVu Reader for Mac: Compare Native and Free Apps

Read DjVu like a Mac document—not a file you have to convert first.

Niraqua DjVu is a native DjVu reader for Mac with Quick Look previews, Finder thumbnails, on-device text recognition, and searchable PDF export. Open your scanned book where it is, find the passage you need, and share the right pages.

Mac: macOS 14 Sonoma or later. iPhone and iPad: iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later. The App Store shows your local price.

Start with what you need after opening the file. Niraqua brings the native document workflow, local OCR, and PDF export together. Free desktop and browser readers are also worth considering, especially for an occasional document.

Native and free options at a glance

DjView / DjVuLibreOpen-source desktop viewing, plus a separate library and command-line toolchain.Free. Check the available viewer build for your macOS version and processor.
DjVu.jsViewing a DjVu in a browser without installing a desktop reader.Free and open source. The library supports local processing in the browser.

For DjView, distinguish the desktop viewer from the DjVuLibre library and command-line tools: installing one is not the same as installing all three.

A browser viewer does not necessarily upload your document. DjVu.js can process it locally; an upload-based online converter is a different workflow. Check the particular website’s processing and privacy policy before opening sensitive material.

The advantage of a native reader starts before you open it. Niraqua adds useful previews to Finder and works with the file commands, windows, and shortcuts you already know.

Select a DjVu file in Finder and press Space. Quick Look lets you scroll through its pages; open Niraqua when you need search, recognition, or export. First-page thumbnails also help you identify books in Finder’s icon and gallery views. See Quick Look and thumbnails.

Use familiar windows, shortcuts, and file commands

Section titled “Use familiar windows, shortcuts, and file commands”
Open files where they are
Use Finder’s Open With menu, drag a document onto the Dock icon, or return through File > Open Recent. Each document opens in its own window.
Keep your keyboard habits
Use Command-O to open, Command-F to find, Command-C to copy, and Command-P to print. Navigation, zoom, OCR, and export have shortcuts too.
Manage the original file
Duplicate, rename, or move a document with the standard File menu commands. These manage the file without rewriting its DjVu contents.
Share and print through macOS
Send the original through the system share sheet, including AirDrop, or choose a printer and page range in the standard print dialog.

For the exact controls, see opening documents, keyboard shortcuts, file management and export, and printing.

One App Store purchase includes all three editions. There is no separate Niraqua purchase for each platform and no subscription. Read at your desk on Mac, open a book on iPad, or consult a scan on iPhone.

The mobile editions open documents in place through Files and include on-device OCR and PDF export. You choose where to store and share your documents; the purchase does not require a Niraqua account. See the iPhone and iPad workflow.

Niraqua DjVu supports Family Sharing for up to six people in total: you and five other family members. With Apple’s Purchase Sharing enabled, eligible family members can download the shared app without buying their own copy. They use their own Apple Accounts. Sharing the purchase is separate from sharing your documents.

Follow Apple’s Purchase Sharing instructions. Each device must meet the app’s requirements: macOS 14+, iOS 26+, or iPadOS 26+.

Family Sharing supported. No subscription. Check your local price on the App Store.

Niraqua opens .djvu, .djv, and .djvm files, including single-page scans and multi-page books, without an import or PDF conversion step. Use page thumbnails to jump through a document, its contents when an outline is included, and bookmarks to save useful pages.

On Mac, choose single-page or two-page layouts, with continuous scrolling available for both. Keep two sources in separate windows to consult them side by side. Zoom in to check small print or a diagram, then return to the page layout that suits the book. The reading guide covers the controls.

Just need to open your first file or set a default app? Follow how to open DjVu on Mac. For a long document, try a few distant page jumps and inspect a detailed illustration as well as the opening page.

Find and copy text—even when the scan has no text layer

Section titled “Find and copy text—even when the scan has no text layer”

A page can show perfectly readable words while containing only an image. Searching existing text and recognizing new text are different features. Niraqua can do both: search a document’s embedded text, or use OCR—optical character recognition—to make image-only pages searchable and selectable.

For example, you might see a surname in a scanned journal but get no search results. Choose View > Text Recognition…, select the document language, and run recognition locally on your Mac. Then search for the surname and copy the passage into your notes.

Fast and Accurate recognition support different language sets. Choose the language that matches your document and consult the OCR options. Check quotations, names, dates, and numbers against the image: OCR can make mistakes.

For missing or incomplete results, use the DjVu search troubleshooting guide.

Export a searchable PDF—or just the chapter you need

Section titled “Export a searchable PDF—or just the chapter you need”

Keep the DjVu for reading; create a PDF when a colleague, annotation app, or submission system needs one. Choose File > Export as PDF, then export the whole document, the current page, or an inclusive page range.

For a chapter spanning document pages 20–35, choose that range instead of exporting the whole book. Select an image-quality preset and enable OCR to include searchable text. Recognition can run during export and is limited to the selected pages.

Share the pages you need, with optional searchable text.

Use Export as PDF for OCR and image-quality controls. The print dialog’s Save as PDF option is a different path. Conversion cannot recover detail missing from the scan, and the PDF may be larger than its DjVu source. Keep the original and check the exported pages before sharing.

See DjVu-to-PDF conversion for the steps, DjVu versus PDF for format tradeoffs, or using DjVu documents with Zotero for a research workflow.

Reading, text recognition, and PDF conversion run locally. Niraqua has no document-upload service, account, or app analytics. That means you can work with files already on your device without an internet connection.

Cloud storage and sharing are separate: putting a file in iCloud Drive or sending it through another app uses the service you choose. Download cloud documents before going offline. Read the app privacy policy for the details.

Preview does not natively open DjVu. Use a compatible reader or export a PDF. Niraqua adds Finder Quick Look previews; that does not add DjVu format support to the Preview app itself.

Why pay for a DjVu reader when free options exist?

Section titled “Why pay for a DjVu reader when free options exist?”

Choose Niraqua for the combined workflow: Finder previews, familiar Mac document controls, local OCR, and searchable PDF export, with iPhone and iPad included. A free reader can be enough for occasional viewing; compare the options above against the tasks you actually need.

Do I need to buy Niraqua again for iPhone or iPad?

Section titled “Do I need to buy Niraqua again for iPhone or iPad?”

No. The same purchase includes Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Use the Apple Account associated with your purchase to download the other editions, and check each device’s compatibility. A shared family purchase uses Apple’s Purchase Sharing instead.

Yes. Up to six family members in total can use the shared purchase when Apple’s Purchase Sharing is enabled. Each person uses their own Apple Account and a compatible device. See the purchase and family details.

Can I search a DjVu that contains only scanned images?

Section titled “Can I search a DjVu that contains only scanned images?”

Yes. Run on-device text recognition to make the pages searchable and selectable. Search can also use an existing text layer. Recognition depends on the scan and selected language; verify important passages against the original image.

Niraqua reads the document contents without rewriting them. Bookmarks save useful pages, but they do not edit the scan. For a PDF annotation workflow, export a PDF and open it in an annotation app. Niraqua is a reader and converter, not a DjVu authoring tool.

Which devices and operating systems are supported?

Section titled “Which devices and operating systems are supported?”

The Mac edition requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. The iPhone and iPad editions require iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or later. Check the App Store’s compatibility information before purchasing for an older device.

Preview the book in Finder. Read and search the original. Export the pages you need. Niraqua brings those steps into one native workflow, with iPhone and iPad included in the purchase.
