# Saving and exporting

> Duplicate, rename, move, or share a DjVu document, or export it to PDF - all pages, the current page, or a page range, with a quality preset and an optional searchable text layer.

## Duplicate, rename, or move the original

Niraqua DjVu opens `.djvu` files as read-only, but the standard macOS file
commands are available in the **File** menu:

- **File > Duplicate** (`⌘` `⇧` `S`) makes a copy of
  the open document.
- **File > Rename** renames the `.djvu` file in place.
- **File > Move To** moves the `.djvu` file to another folder.
- **File > Share** sends the original `.djvu` to Mail, Messages, AirDrop, or any
other destination in the macOS share sheet.

These commands act on the file itself - the app never rewrites or alters the
contents of your document.

The bundled sample document (**Help > Open Sample Document**) is the one
exception: it cannot be duplicated, renamed, or moved, so those three commands
do not appear for it. They are available for any `.djvu` file you open yourself.

## Export to PDF

1. Open the DjVu document.
2. Choose **File > Export as PDF** or press `⌘` `⇧` `E`.
3. Under **Pages**, choose how much of the document to export (see below).
4. Choose a **Quality** preset (see below).
5. Optionally turn on **Enable OCR** to add a searchable text layer.
6. Choose where to save, then click **Export**.

## Choose which pages to export

The **Pages** control at the top of the export options decides how much of the
document ends up in the PDF:

| Option | What it exports |
| --- | --- |
| **All Pages** | The whole document. This is the default. |
| **Current Page** | Only the page you were on when you opened the export options. |
| **Page Range** | Everything between **From** and **To**, including both. |

Choosing **Page Range** reveals the **From** and **To** fields, filled in with
the first and last page of the document. Page numbers start at 1 and both ends
are included, so `2` to `4` exports three pages.

If the range does not make sense - a page beyond the end of the document, or a
**From** larger than a **To** - the message *Enter a valid page range.* appears
and **Export** stays dimmed until you correct it.

Exporting fewer pages is quicker, and it matters most with **Enable OCR**
turned on: text recognition only runs on the pages you selected, so a short
range from a long book finishes in a fraction of the time.

## Quality presets

| Preset | Best for |
| --- | --- |
| **Original** | Use as a reference when checking fine print, maps, and illustrations. |
| **High** | Start here for general reading; check small text and image detail after export. |
| **Compact** | Try for smaller files; check thin lines and small print after export. |

**High** is a good default for most documents.

## Make the PDF searchable

Turn on **Enable OCR** in the export options to recognize the text and embed it
in the PDF, so the exported file can be searched in any PDF reader. Pick the
language that matches the document. If the document already has embedded text,
OCR replaces it and the export may take several minutes.

If you only need search inside Niraqua DjVu, you can instead run
[text recognition](https://niraqua.com/djvu/help/text-recognition/) without exporting.
